Force yourself. Will power is the strongest thing you need Then there's patches, gum, those little plastic cigerettes, and a little more willpower Good luck PV

PV, After 26 years of smoking my mom took Zyban & has not smoked since 1997. I never thought in a million years she could quit! (my dad had just passed away) She smoked 3 packs a day. She did it though. I was so proud of her. Still am. You have already made the biggest step!! Knowing in your heart that you need to quit, & wanting to is huge. Good Luck!! I know it will be tough on you, I am sure you will do it though. My mom ate tons of hard candy in the beginning also. Everytime she wanted to light up. Sha

When my son gave up smoking, he used a nicotine patch. I've heard that you can wean yourself off smoking by smoking just one less cigarette every day until you aren't smoking any. Good luck! totalfolly

Good luck hun! I've smoked since i was 18 and i'm on around 25 a day. The only times i've been able to give up just like that is when i've been pregnant. I gave up for 18 months, 9 months whilst pregnant, then until meg was 9 months old. Postnatal depression got me back on the ciggies. If i fall pregnant again, i'll give up but until then, i'll need to get my stress levels down first before i even think about giving up.
I do hope you can make it!!! I've got the upmost respect for people who try to quit!

That's great PV. I know you can do it. I used to chain smoke for a few years, and just decided to quit cold turkey. Don't miss it at all, and can't stand being around the smell, makes me quite sick actually I believe there are other healthier ways to deal with stress than lighting up, I don't think it's as hard to quit as some people make it out to be, but maybe thats just me, I'm pretty disciplined I guess. Good luck and we are here for you

Okay only 4 cigerettes left, then i am giving up smoking cold turkey (with a little bit of help from the patches of course) I have my new Aviator and name ready to suit my mood when i do and i will warn people now that anything i say or do in the next couple of days IGNORE IGNORE IGNORE! I am a super bit*ch when i dont have cigerettes....but of course i will try my hardest to hold back on here.

Best of luck PV and also, exercise really helps with stress. Try to have something in your hands to fiddle with and then you won't miss that little stick. I hope you can stop, for your own health and for the health of those around you. Wooley

What Mikey said.. lol Well, sometimes getting out and taking a walk to clear your head if you aren't feeling right, or I like to take a nice little drive sometimes and listen to music I like, take the kiddies out to the park or something. Just some suggestions here. Think of things that you like to do... Be creative

Hows it going PV ? Sorry I have no experience of giving them up i'm just going to have a chimney fitted in the top of my head Val and Bert gave up last year, they got help from NHS with a choice of Nicotine replacement (altho I know they didnt take them) and group support meetings. I am sure Val will be able to offer some good advice when she sees the thread or you could always IM her

When I quit for a month (lol) I used the patch. I took celery to work to munch on....a scratch pad for scribbling....avoid the things you would normally do. Phones, cars, computers, all triggers. lol So be ready for it with stuff to do. Clear out all ashtrays, and maybe repaint. Count the money you save. Count the cigarettes that your body is NOT being forced to inhale. Read up on how many chemicals are in there. Avoid coffee. lol Gah. See? Easy. I truly wish you the best of luck with this adventure....and I've heard it said that quitting cold turkey? It's the first six days that are the worst, if you can get past that.....you should have a better chance at it. Even if you do go back to it...say you last a month...think of all the ones you didn't smoke....and try a second time....I heard that it's something like 17 honest tries before you can really quit. So just keep at it!

Congratulations PV! That's a big decision and a really good one. I'm glad you're posting. I need to stop smoking and am using every little bit of stress as my excuse to keep puffing... and eating. I'm waiting 'til I move, I know that if I don't have a major stress coming up it'll be easier for me. It's always worked in the past Keep up the good work, I'll be following your progress and getting inspiration
