Hello, all.  I hope that this has caught your attention, since I am quite excited by the results of my new acne treatment program.  I have struggled with acne for about 10 years.  My acne was never severe, but I used topical antibiotics, systemic antibiotics, benzoyl peroxide, alpha/beta hydroxy acids, Retin-A, Accutane, VERY expensive aesthetician treatments, and a variety of "natural" and over-the-counter treatments in efforts to rid myself of annoying and unsightly cysts, whiteheads, and blackheads.  Only two things worked well; the others were disappointing.  The first thing was Accutane.  However, Accutane's side effects were not trivial.  Most problematic for me was the muscle soreness.  Weight lifting was doubly hard, because my muscles hurt for more than a week after a workout.  Accutane is also dangerous for the liver, making regular blood tests necessary.  My lips became so dry that I could peel a strip of dead skin all the way accross my lip.  The dryness was uncomfortable.  But because my acne disappeared and the effect is semi-permanent, I thought the course of Accutane was worth while.  Notice that the effect is semi-permanent.  My 6 month course cured my acne for about 2 years and then my acne came back with less intensity.  My acne never again became as intense as it was before the Accutane.

The second treatment plan that has worked as well as Accutane but without the side effects is...cutting sugar (and other calorie-dense sweeteners) from my diet.  I am not a "natural" foods fanatic who thinks that Cheetos are poison and that "chemical"=toxic.  I always doubted that sugar was as bad as people claim.  After all, cane sugar is completely natural and the processing of it isn't conceptually different from the processing of oranges to make orange juice.  However when my friend told me that he breaks out after having dessert, I decided to try eliminating sugar from my diet.  The results were immediate!  Since eliminating sugar, I've had only one cyst (opposed to one every other day before).  The one cyst came the morning after I enjoyed a glass of tonic water, which contains high fructose corn syrup.

I hope you'll try the sugar-less diet for at least a few days.  There are additional up-sides to eliminating sugar from your diet.  Sugar increases your risk of dental cavities.  Sugar is an "empty" carbohydrate that delivers calories without vitamins, mineral, or fiber.  Sugar consumption elevates your blood sugar suddenly, increasing your need for insulin and straining your pancreas.

It's not easy to eliminate sugar; I certainly crave it.  But I'm so happy to be rid of the annoying, painful cysts on my forehead, that my temptations to eat sugary foods serve as reminders of my near-perfect complexion and the sacrifices I'm making to maintain it.

Now if I can just get rid of the blackheads on my forehead and nose.  My dermatologist prescribed Retin-A micro for this problem, but I haven't had dramatic results after several weeks of consistent use.  I should disclose that I started the Retin-A before I cut out the sugar and before I noticed the reduction in cysts.  But I believe that the cause of the elimination of my cystic acne is the elimination of sugar from my diet, because the chronological corrolation was so tight and because one slip up (the tonic water) was immediately followed by a cyst.  Please note that there are many sweeteners that will probably aggravate acne the way sugar does.  "Evaporated cane juice" is basically the same thing as white sugar.  A moderate amount of high fructose corn syrup seems to have caused a cyst.  Bee honey, on the other hand, seems okay for me.  I enjoy it in my plain yogurt.  It's more delicious, I think, than the sugary yogurts you get in cups at the store.  Bee honey does contain a lot of sugar, though, so if you're consuming it and the acne doesn't go away, try cutting out all sugars including the honey.

If anyone has had success in eliminating blackheads, please let me know what your secret is.  I know that Accutane will work, but I don't want to go through the side effects.  I still use alpha and beta hydroxy acids in my face wash, and I still use Retin-A Micro.  I have found Biore Pore Perfect strips effective at removing blackheads, but the blackheads are back the next day.  Any other ideas?

Thanks, and good luck to you, fellow acne sufferers.  Please post to let me know if this experiment worked for your acne.  And please post if you have a cure for blackheads.

Humor heals.....Sometimes I think the only way to cure my itching scalp pustules  and my nasty face pimples is to simply exise the affected area...just cut my whole darn head off!!!!!!!!!!!  Shocked
