Title: G'day from Brisbane
Post by: CassyAustralia on May 13, 2003, 09:54:27 AM
[glow=red,2,300] Hi, I'm a new member. Just registered. I am from Brisbane, Australia, and my name is Cassy. I'm 50 years old, and I have a skin problem which I can't seem to get answers for from the medical pple.
Basically, there are two ways this problem presents itself.
First, I itch. Extremely badly! You would have to be dead NOT to scratch it, it is that bad. But then when I do scratch it, my skin breaks, and I end up with a sore. It takes forever to heal them, and my legs and arms are now scarred pretty bad. I am currently rubbing Vitamin E on them to try and help the situation.
The second problem is tiny little "skin breaks". The skin just breaks open and bleeds. Again, these become itchy, although not as bad as the first one, but if I scratch them, they just become bigger and bigger sores.
I am currently going through menopause, and I have also had some run-ins with cancer, for which I have been treated with radiation therapy, and I am now on Tamoxifen to try to prevent further tumours developing.
Has anyone heard of this problem before?? I'd appreciate ANY input.
And thanks for a great site!!
Cheers
Cassy[/glow]

:hi: Cassy
A big welcome to the Forum, so sorry to hear what you are going through, I suffer from Psoriasis myself and do know what the itching is like. Is it by any chance related to the Tamoxifen your are on, reading up on this tablet it does report ---- Very rare side effects of tamoxifen include, Allergic reactions - this may include skin rashes.----
Have you explored this to see if it's the tablets are causing the rash? Maybe some of the other members may have some input on this subject. We have a couple of Aussie members so you're in good company.
Well lots to read on the Forum, look forward to getting to know you through your postings.

Hi there Cassy, Welcome to SkinCell :hi:
It sounds like you have been having a terrible time of it lately, I'm really sorry to hear about that. As if you didn't have enough on your plate with fighting the cancer your skin then decides to so AWOL and start itching and bleeding >:(
Well I'm glad that you found us, hoepfully we may be able to help a little, if not with medical advice then certainly with a bit of healthy understanding, empathy and support
I would certainly agree with Peter about getting your medication checked so you can confirm that it is not the cause of the problem. It does concern me that you are seeing splits in the skin though. Do you mind me asking what parts of the body the skin splits appear on? Some skin conditions only affect certain parts of the body and knowing the location may help us track down the problem. |

:hi: Cassy,
Firstly welcome to our forum ;D very pleased to have you with us.
The itch! Boy do we understand that around here. :( Drives you nuts doesn't it. :-X As Peter and Nick have said, get that medication checked out. Sometimes it's the medications that cause these things, I know I for one have had stuff in the past for one condition, that has brought another condition up. ??? ??? ??? But once that has been sussed (if it is that), then you should get back to normal in a few weeks.
Nice to have another 50something around ;D There are just a few of them her. Of course I'm not one of them. ;) ::)
Looking forward to getting o know you better, through your posts and maybe the chat room sometime.
Hope you find some relief soon, take care.
Val  |

Hi There Cassy .
Nice to have another Queenslander on board .
I know others have offered good advice for you . I can only endorse what peter and Nick say .. Have you checked on the medication .. ?
You mat be experiencing some reaction to that.
Also .. Are you on any blood thinning med .. Like asprin etc.. and I would perhaps just get the blood pressure checked .. Sometimes this can cause an itchy sensation etc.
Hope to see some more posts from you .
Lets know how you get on

| G'day Cassy! I'm from Brissy too... I have Hidradenitis Suppurativa and Psiorsis ( damn, I can spell HS but I can't spell the "P" word! lol) I get itchy skin but not to the extent that you do! Hope to hear from you again! |

Thank you so much catpreau! I am using Vitamin E cream on them daily now, and touch wood, it's slowed it right down, although I still have it. I think it's got something to do with the menopause, it didn't start until then. I get two problems, the tiny skin breaks that just bleed and if I don't get the Vitamin E cream on them straight away, they just get bigger and bigger sores. And then I get this horrible horrible itch that is so bad, I cannot help but scratch the damn thing! Again, the Vitamin E is helping that too. I don't know if you have tried that??

Thanks so much to everyone for their great support and kind words! Unfortunately, (and yes, I'm a supposed computer geek type person), I haven't been able to work out how to reply to anyone until today!! So please forgive me if you have thought I was being rude :-\
Sadly, my condition definitely has nothing to do with my medication. Like all of you, I always read the enclosed pamphlets  and my condition started long before I got the cancer and the subsequent drug Tamoxifen. Plus I checked with my doctor just to be sure.
It seems to me to be some sort of thinning of the skin, and one of the symptons of menopause is "feelings of crawling under the skin" - well, it could be that I guess.
Nick... it first showed up on my legs, on the thighs. And only on the right leg. Then it moved down on my right leg, then it started on the thigh of my left leg, then down my left leg. Then it began to appear on my lower arms, both at the same time, then the upper arms, and now I have had my first one on my chest just below the shoulder.
As I said, the Vitamin E is helping a lot, not only to control the itch, but also the scars are slowly fading too. Double bonus. Oh, and yes, I have lovely soft skin now! ;D Thank you all again for being so warm and welcoming. You have a great site! If I ever get a full medical name for this horrible thing, I will be sure to post it for you! ;)
Cheers

Hi Cassy,
It's odd that it decided to spread in that way. It makes me wonder if it could possibly be a viral/bacterial or possibly a fungal problem ? ? |

Yeah you could be right with that bacterial thing Nick. I have always had this problem with my hands....I was forever getting a very bad itchy left hand, with little blisters becoming sores on my fingers. I had a feeling it was an allergy, and I tested everything that I was using to wash my hands. It turned out to be any perfumed liquid soap (you know, the stuff you use in the bathroom?). I can use Palmolive Anti Bacterial only, and in the shower, I use a Medi-Bact soap. My hands are both clear now, and have been since I stopped using perfumed soaps.
My legs are still occassionally breaking in little spots, but with the daily use of the Vitamin E, they disappear pretty quick. So at the moment, it seems I have it under control to a fair degree. I still get the occasional sharp itch, but again the Vitamin E stops it from forming a sore. I just don't know what the stupid thing is.
Cheers
