my sinus problem has finally gotten out of control. it started 5 yrs ago. i only got pressure headaches. i used every medicine known to relieve my sinuses. now its five yrs passed, and i have a terrible horrific pressure pain in my upper right jaw it feels as though the jaw bone might explode from pressure. before i go to sleep, im fine then about 4 hours into sleeping i am awoken every night by this intense aching pain, with this pain i cannot open my mouth, nor can i close my mouth. and my right nostril if i breath air in hurts like (heck). it takes about 3 hours of sitting up to relieve the pressure. out of five days in the week i have a four day headeach, which makes me neauseous, and feeling very sickly. my head is constantly congested, i have tried everything. i really dont wish to sleep any more for fear of the pain waking me up. i will be going to the doctor soon enough, something is terribly wrong in my nose it is making the quality of my life terrible. i even sleep with 2 pillows no use, i drink water all day long, decongestant, you name it, any advice? god bless poo......................

Aww Poochie I don't know what else to suggest to you that you have not tried already. When you move to the US I hope you can see a specialist and perhaps have a head scan to try and find out what is going on with your sinuses. Do you grind your teeth in your sleep? I have heard that can cause pain in the jaw. Perhaps it might be worth getting one of those mouth pieces that cover your teeth when you sleep. I can't think of the proper word for them at the moment. I am so sorry that you are having to put up with this along with your chronic . Take care of yourself Poochie. xxx

Ouch Poochie! The only thing I can suggest is to add more pillows to your bed, 1 for under your back and some more for your head so that you're sleeping more in a sitting position. I often have to do that when my asthma is bad and also Bert does it when his sinuses are playing up. The other thing that may help is putting a little camphor oil on your top pillow so that you're breathing it in whilst sleeping. That's an old remedy my gran used, but she would also use some vicks vapour rub at night as well for her sinuses. Hope you find some relief soon.

My friend used to grind his teeth wilst he was asleep and used to wake up in so much pain he used one of those gum shield things and that helped. You can get those strips that go over your the bridge of your nose to help with the sinuses too. Like Hvns said the sooner you get to the US the better poo get some help for the probs and hopefully get some releif too

Gobe: i thought the grinding of the teeth might be it, but this is now happening when im up. i tried the teeth protectors and i am not grinding my teeth. VAL : I am sleeping with two pillows already, and a quilt under my mattress. i am one of those people who cannot sleep sitting up, i have tried and still so much pain. HVN : I cannot wait until i move to florida, the secretary to the ENT told me i have to wait till June 29 for an apointment, or if i want to stand outside the office 4oclock in the morning and put my name on a list, she said if i am one of the first 20th people on the list i will be seen, but that is only after the people who have an appointment for that day is seen first, ill be there all day and night. thanks FLUFFY and LULU .Puerto Rico is terrible for medical.
thank you all god bless poo............

Hi Poochie
I suffer from chronic sinusitis also with severe jaw pain (in fact I am just recovering from an acute attack). One of the things my specialist said was to try lying with my head lowered (no pillows and the foot of the bed raised) He said that sometimes the overgrowth of tissue in the sinus causes a 'pocket' to develop which can't drain in the upright position. I have tried this and, although i didn't manage to go a whole night like that, it has helped loads. I use steam inhalations before bed (i am lucky to have a hand held one) and massage my face as firmly as pain allows using arnica cream (not sure what it does but its supposed to be great for bruises and swellings). I have a vaporiser on all night with a mix of lavender, tea tree and eucalyptus oils. I have the bedroom windows and doors open for a through flow of air and have a fan on but not directed at my face. Before I do all this I have a bath or shower to help loosen anything before I use the steamer.
It's a bit of a pain to go through that every night BUT on the occassions that i don't (lots I am afraid) I really suffer.
I had a tooth guard because I used to also chew my tongue because of the pressure of the sinuses but it made no difference and within 3 weeks the tooth guard had nearly worn away!

Hi Poochie,
I would go to a dentist - it may be chronic sinusitus but could also be TMJ (Tri-mandibular joint syndrome) this can cause severe jaw pain and would be made worse by blocked sinuses
Just a thought

hello all just an update had a monsterous attack 2 nights ago felt for sure jaw would explode, it took 2 hours for the pain to let up. i went to my regular doctor and she gave me zyrtec-d 12 hour one in the morning and one at night, also she gave me augmentin xr 1000mg. to be taken once a day. and some nose spray, this is just until i see a ent which is not until july 12 (damn) i have to wait too long. i am adding a pitchure of what happens to my face after the pain in my jaw has let up. the bruise does not go away until the next day. thanks for reading poochie.

Hi Poochie It looks like mine, only I get it more along the cheekbone - i have always thought that it was more like the pressure from the sinuses causing an effect like if you lean on your arm for too long - mine never itches or is painful although it tends to subside a lot quicker than yours - usually by lunchtime. I bumped into my ENT specialist yesterday and he is going to arrange for another MRI scan due to the vomiting I have experienced (thinks there may be pressure on a nerve and, as I have condition that results in a hypersensitive gag reflex it may be affecting that) hope the medication works well julie

Hi Poochie that means that the mucous membranes have become thickened and scarred due to your chronic sinusitis. The treatment is usually to have it removed (that's what I had done the first time) julie

Hiya Poo, Oddly enough, I get a re-occuring jaw problem and have been suffering withit for the past few days. I get a condition called Temporomandibular Disorder. It's caused by stress and my form of it causing the muscles holding the jaw on the left side to spasm. This spasm then disturbs the small plate that lies between the jaw joint and the skull - causing incredible pain when opening the jaw or biting. Have a look at this site for more info on it, it really helped me to work out what was going wrong to cause the pain: http://www.nidr.nih.gov/health/pubs/tmd/text.htmMy problems seems to stress related and I know that you too have been a bit stressed lately - maybe there is a similar link for you? Let me know what you think
