gentle cleansers without "SLS" -sodium lauryl sulfate ??
« on: Wednesday April 21, 2004, 09:25:27 PM »
hi all.

i have read that sodium lauryl sulfate, a major ingredient in cosmetics, could aggrevate certain skin conditions and act as an irritant. Is this true?
Are there any gentle soapfree cleansers out there without SLS?

abc2 - I have considered this myself...im currently using Selsun shampoo for my seborrhoeic dermatitis, which has Ammonium Lauryl Sulphate in.  As an experiment, I tried some Dead Sea Salt shampoo - the only one I could find without SLS or ALS...and my skin was the worst it has been since I was using Betnovate over 1 1/2 years ago.  I cant recommend any products, just saying that the SLS may not be the answer.

By the way, Body Shop for all their 'herbal' products still use chemicals by the bucketload - they didnt have a single shampoo without SLS

I use Emulsifying Wax 3% in Water to wash with.  You could probably use it it wash hair with as well but it does not foam up so much as soap.

It is what they use in the Derm Ward here as a soap substitute.  It contains no SLS or preservatives.  It only contains the Emulsifying wax and purified water.

You can also use plain Emulsifying wax to wash with.

I love Lamas Rice protein shampoo which I get at my local health food store. I also like Jason products for hand soap, toothpaste, body soap, and I think they have a shampoo.  It makes a huge difference for me.  Not sure if it is the lack of chemicals and/or SLS in particular.  Good luck.          Nicole

It took me years, but, I finally found a shampoo that I could use.  It's call Safe Choice head and body shampoo. An odorless, dye free, non toxic shampoo recommended for use even by the chemically sensitive.  Engredients are purified water, sls, cocamide, MEA, citric acid.  I buy it from Environmentally Sound Products   1-800-886-5432  I buy it by the gallon to save money.
Hope this helps! ;D

I have to use toothpaste without SLS.  It aggrivates my cancers, and makes them worse.  There is only one kind I can find locally, it is Rembrandt(the purple one for cancer sore suffers).  This has helped me and my mouth.  So I can imagine that SLS could also aggrivate anyother sore on the body.
