Bits and Bytes
« on: Sunday December 29, 2002, 09:02:20 PM »
I received a recommendation that as the forum could only be accessed through the internet (which in turn normally means members having a PC) that we could open a board specifically for PC related matters, troubleshooting, software and hardware discussions, Internet, Tips and tweaks etc.

Sorry everybody, :shake:

I did say that the board was recommended so I'm afraid I cannot take any credit for the idea.

That honour belongs to our Rockerator, Peter !

He spotted the need for it, hats off to the Rock ;D

Just another suggestion but when posting problems about your PC its always a good thing to let us know what setup you have (operating system/hardware/memory etc)

 :help:
Well let's see if I can give all you PC savvy peep's out there and easy question.
Number 1:
If I attach a file to the end of my post why can't I see it?  Can you see it? I'll attach one to the bottom of this.
Number 2:
How come I can't see the flag on my own posts?  Can you all see the flag?
See now that should be easy fodder for ya'll. :brow:

Hi Jesster,

Sorry for the delay,

Attachments do not show the image on the open thread to save downloading time for members and guests with non-broadband connections.
Imagine a page full of jpg attachments and you'll get the general idea, 20 posts each containing a 20Kb jpg file on screen would take up to 90 seconds to load deoending on connection.
This way, members load the pages faster abd can pick and choose which attachments they want to view.
When the forum goes through it's next upgrade this option will hopefully be selected by each member individually so they can choose for themselves

You should certainly be able to see your own attachment files once the message has been posted (please note that does not include using the "Preview" function)
If it's not then please let me know ;)

Hi Mo, sorry for the delay.

OK, say you have a file called Mo.jpg sitting on your hard drive in your "My Documents" folder.

You would need to click on "Reply" or "New Topic" in the forum.
Below the text box for your message there is the option that reads
Quote
Attach:

Allowed file types: txt,jpg,jpeg,gif,pdf,mpg,png,wav
Maximum attachment size allowed: 100 KB

Click on the Browse button. Thsi will then open up a window on to your hard drive. Use the window (same as with windows explorer) and find the file called "Mo.jpg in your "My Documents" folder.
Select the file called Mo.jog so it is hi-lited, then click on the "Open" button.

The file will now upload to SkinCell, then click on "Post" on the forum.
DO NOT TRY TO PREVIEW THE MESSAGE - THE ATTACHMENT WILL NOT UPLOAD  :)

I hope that helps Mo, any problems please let me know :hugs:

That's useful Nick - I didn't see those options at the bottom until you pointed them out.

I noticed though that .swf (flash) files aren't allowed - is there a reason for that?

Also I tried attaching an animated gif but it doesn't seem to animate! Is there a way around this (I don't know very much about php)
I'm playing The SkinCell Daily Quiz - are you??
