Globalinterestin skin shield Feb 21 2004

Rhodri Evans, The Western Mail

A CWMBRAN-based company has received an order from the other side of the world for its skin protection product.

Benchmark Technologies, which produces pharmaceutical-grade skin protectant Derma Shield, has received a five-figure order from Australia for its laboratory-tested product.

It will be sold to the Australians via industrial distribution, as well as to general consumers in the country's drug stores and DIY and gardening outlets.

The product provides the skin with an invisible and breathable protective coating that shields it from external irritants, providing protection in a broad range of situations.

As well as being readily available to industry and consumers alike, Derma Shield is also obtainable on NHS prescription. The product has a healthy following in the UK's industrial sector, within the medical community and in the consumer market.

It has also been used by the cast of West End hits Cats and Les Miserables as a defence against heavy stage make-up.

Due to high interest levels from local industry, a new sales person has been employed to serve the South Wales region.

"Our largest market is in industry," Peter Friswell, Benchmark Technologies' managing director, said. "Skin problems are now among the top three causes of days off work.

"Employees frequently suffer from skin problems after dealing with substances such as solvents, heavy metals and printers' ink. In 85-90% of cases Derma Shield will solve such skin problems.

"The product is also very effective in soothing the effects of psoriasis and eczema and in preventing nappy rash," he added.

The company worked with WalesTrade International's Objective One-backed initiative ExportAssist to break into the Australian market, and is now receiving support as it researches possibilities in Ireland, Germany and Scandinavia.

"Without ExportAssist I don't think we would have been able to establish a flourishing market in Australia so quickly," said Mr Friswell, who formed Benchmark Technologies in 1994.

"This is a superb product that lends itself to domestic and overseas markets," said Chris Sweet, export development counsellor with ExportAssist.

"Because it sinks into the skin without leaving a greasy film, it has a practical application in a number of different fields, from industry to health to the consumer market.

"Its potential worldwide is enormous."

Great article peter.  Thanks.
Too bad ExportAssist can't do anything about getting Miya-BM onto the International market.
Later!
