Most of the snake oil remedies are conveniently listed here along with commentary.
Particularly noteworthy for me was a reference to Acadia Skin Care products, which I purchased about a year ago.  One of the products sent was already
8 MONTHS OUTDATED UPON RECEIPT!  SHAMEFUL!  Pinch notes that: "In 1990, the FDA specifically banned the promotion of zinc pyrithione products for psoriasis treatment."  The zinc was Acadia's claim to fame.  Good reading.

Thanks for posting this, Paul.  Just this morning I ran across an ad for Acadia products and thought of checking them out.  I guess I don't need to now!   Smiley

 Hi there

Interesting.

I have to say that these scam sites with scam products know exactly how to manipulate and hoodwink an unsuspecting public. They are aware of just how to word advertising material and work on the theory that as the bulk of the general public has very limited knowledge of what is involved, and what the legal requirements are to have a legitimate product approved for a specific use  by the various government agencies.

They even stoop to the notion that by indicating that a certain products contains 100% herbal ingredients  to have you believe that one might assume that it would be classed as a herbal remedy and be exempt from any regulations etc .. Wrong .. They do not then give you the follow up facts which they actually know only to well..

Once you make a claim or qualify a statement  on a product or about a product  etc  such as this  product "will relieve itch " or "will cure or relieve  a certain condition" it then automatically comes under the juristriction of the government approval agencies as a medicine or drug or a medical device. It is taken out of the catagory of a food additive or suppliment, cosmetic or herbal remedy .

It could be a bottle of water  for all intent and purpose but if you said on the lable this water will kill the hylo  pylori bacteria  it is then classed as a medicine .. The manufacture would then be compelled by law to comply totally with the governance of the medicines act in relation to that products stated claim ..

Some 12 years ago I exposed through the Australian News Media this product called Linotar for the utter scam that it was .. I almost was forced into a mental home trying to convince a gulliable public that I was indeed correct.. I did my homework, produced factual evidence  and the paper concerned supported me.  We took this crowd on and we won and the authorities banned the product .. I was subsequently proved to be totally correct as this bod moved from country to country with this scam product and was also banned where ever he went once the authorities were alerted ..

Sadly he has no scruples . He continues  to this day, having his products relabled and marketed  and each time he gets found out he gets banned and just surfaces again ,. I thik he is calling this stuf exoderm currently which has also come to the notice of authorities and has actually been banned in most countries..

Good work Paul ..  I dont mind taking these sods on . It is only apathy and the fact that these sods continue to find ways of having their products exposed to the public that encourages these scam merchants to continue ripping off the unsuspecting public .. I am fortnate that through my job and contacts,  and my knowledge of the industry through investigation etc that I am able to take these guys to task and I will continue to give them aggro at every turn and take them on through the legal means available to me ..

Do your homework, establish the true facts about a product and be wise..

 Hi there

Paul .. Just on the Emu Oil..

I have done a couple of posts re this  stuff here on the forum as well.. I went through the whole proceedure with that oil and explained just what it is and just how people are misled by the so called claims on that one as well..

And just on that Linotar .. The product was actually launched at a health and lifestyle show in Brisbane and this South African actually convinced some of the members who belonged to the psoriasis association to help him . thats how expert this bloke is in the art of con .. I will not name him . but suffice to say he is well aquainted with me and I am not on his xmas card list ..

 Hi there

The FDA guidelines have changed considerably over the past year in relation to just what they will involve themselves in re taking any action against companies  making false claims or selling bogus products ..

I have been in contact with them on a couple of issues in the last few days ..

This is what they indicated ..

They will not even look at a complaint generated from the internet unless the product in question is actually being sold through a retail outlet in the US

They will  take action against any complaint that breaches any of their guidelines only if it is sold or manufactured in the US .. If it is an international product   they will take action against the importer of the product. Not the manufacturer if they happen to reside outside the US.

This has been updated due to the unprecedented number of complaints that they have been receiving . They have no juristriction over any product unless it is Manufactured in the US or is an imported product being sold in the US

 Hi there

The Power and influence of marketing and advertising Guz . Thats how they get away with it ..

You tell the public just what you are permitted to do within the guidelines of the laws, yet be carefull enough to not give them the total facts so that they are still under the impression that it is actually the Emu oil that's doing the job.. It is not  .. but the words Emu Oil are the powerful marketing edge here and thats where if you are flogging a product  you place the iimportance on your key marketing edge not on the rest of the product make up..

Just to illustrate a little further re what may stick in ones mind as being factual etc ..

Have another look at the Posts in this thread re Total and Paul re the arcadia .. Ok  you may well take from that,  great  this product has now been banned by this FDA re the Zinc .. and you may think if you spotted that product in your store down the road  mmm I saw where that was banned .. I might tackle them on this ..

Well you may be eating eggs .. Banned yes .. In the USA only ..

That FDA ruling pertains to the product in the USA only .. The FDA can only ban that product for use in the US .. It may well be legal in say the UK . The govt in your country may  not share the same view re zinc but such is the power of the words FDA you assume  it could be in the uk as well.

Most often they will run parallel with all countries re bans but unlike with approval requirements,  not always ..

Total... !  I'm so glad you read this in time!
My profound respect and congratulations to EVERYBODY running the SC boards!
Here is PROOF POSITIVE that you're having a useful impact on the lives of fellow sufferers!  Today, thanks to total's timely reading of the board, she was spared a needless and expensive experience.  BRAVO!
I've read much as I lurk here quite often of late.  I even manage to sneak in for a short time on lunch hour at work.  I was particularly intrigued by the Josh  Kramer incident.  Good ALL OVER YOU for policing the board and keeping the quality as high as it is.  If Kramer truly had something useful to write, or even just his own opinion to express, he could have done it openly and honestly as you've invited me to do.  I'm truly honored to be participating with such a committed group of folks.  May SkinCell.org be able to help friends and vanquish enemies each and every day!  Praise

Fishs & peterb & Guz ( "Oh my! ) ... Your comments are always thoroughly read and appreciated.  I'll visit the ~archive~ link you provided when I get a moment.

Pinch.com is run by Ed Anderson - a guy who I consider one of the foremost Internet experts on psoriasis.  He is also the editor of the "Psoriasis" categories on DMOZ.

Another excellent site is www.psorsite.com run by a Dave Weiblen, an extremely personable guy with a huge archive of constantly updated information.

Although I *do* agree with them about most of what they write - I've actually tried several of the OTC treatments in the past that they've reviewed negatively and actually found one of them to be really helpful in controlling my P (which I still use today to control small spots on my calves).

Another interesting site is www.flakehq.com by Ed Dewke.  I'll be checking in with this site today for the first time in a couple of months.  There's always something interesting to read when it's updated.

Thumbs up top sites Gary Thumbs up

I make a point of calling in on Ed Dewke at least once a month to see what's happening. Between the three sites it's possible to gather just about all the psoriasis information a personal could ask for.

Thanks for the other links.  I need to organize mine as I've been to some of these sites in the past and didn't recall the URL 'til I saw them posted here again.

Gary!  Please, by all means if you've used a product - even one that others consider ineffective - go back to the board and tell us what it is.  I'd search on it to save you the time, but you didn't mention it by name.
Thanks!
