WORM'S TURN TO FIGHT ILLNESS Mar 1 2003 A TINY worm may hold the key to relieving crippling joint and skin diseases, according to Scots scientists. Researchers in Glasgow have discovered that worms secrete an anti-inflammatory molecule that could ease conditions such as psoriasis and Crohn's disease. People suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes could also benefit. Project leader Professor William Harnett, of Strathclyde University, said: "We hope to use the molecule as the basis for a drug." http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/page.cfm?objectid=12689838&method=full&siteid=89488

Worms I read a little while ago that a hospital in America was using worms to heal Leg Ulcers .. and it was proving reasonably effective . Apparently they made some sort of paultice of live worms etc and they got active on the bacteria which helped heal the ulcers So there is some merit . :-/ But hey, I am with you Val. I don't want anything to do with them .. Fish

I haven't heard of worms for ulcers, my wife is having the maggots at the moment for the second time, to help aid the healing of her leg ulcers.

Pete .
Yeah, I knew about the maggots . They have been quite effective too .. This American Hospital had been using them as well. but was trialling the worms.
I have also just seen a report out last week from the Hamilton Hospital here In NZ where they have been treating Leg Ulcers with a special "Manuka Honey ".
The Hospitals research team "Waikato Health" has won medsafe approval for the product and also for a special impregnated paultice bandage to go on the market .
It is being launched world wide very shortly and will be marketed by a company called "COMVITA" They will be marketing these products as Leg Ulcer Treatments as an over the counter product . The District health Nurses here and in Australia have been using and evaluating the products in Home care service etc and they gave it the thumbs up.
I will dig up the info and hospital research link as soon as I find it and post for all to have a look.

That would be useful, as at present the wife has MRSA back in her stump, if there is another alternative, I could tell the hospital. I posted another possible treatment in General Health ( MRSA ).

when I first started nursing (back in the old days ) we used to make honey poultices for wounds like pressure sores that were infected and were not healing. IT always seemed to work really well.
