Pour 2 pints / 1 quart boiling water over a handful of tobacco (you can pull a part cigarette for this). Let steep for several hours, then strain. After shampooing hair, use the tobacco tea as a rinse. The hair should be rinsed at least 15 times with the tea, so do this over a bowl or plastic basin to catch it. Comb hair directly after rinsing and leave the tea in for shampooing for several hours before shampooing out.

Apple cider vinegar will help loosen the eggs by dissolving the glue that holds them to the hair shafts. Use it as a rinse after shampooing

i used to use a mixture of 20mls groundnut oil, 10 drops tea tree oil and 10 drops of lavender oil. Massage into scalp and hair. After 1 hour comb through with fine comb. Leave on over night (put towel over pillows). In the morning comb again then wash. Repeat every 3 days for two weeks. In between comb through before rinsing out conditioner when washing hair.

THis works but I,ve found something even better - an electric head lice comb from Boots. It kills the little b***ers which can only be a good thing.

Did you know that head lice cannot jump and can only be transferred by direct head to head contact. But di you know that they can survive for up to 3 days away from a human head so as well as treating the hair I would make sure bedding is changed to, and hairbrushes are cleaned.

My sister works in a residential school and one pupil had severe infestation. After combing through her hair they put the towels in the machine on a boil wash - and the lice were still alive at the end of the cycle. Shocked

I'm itching just thinking about it Shakes head

Head Lice also hate tea tree oil so a little of it in your regular shampoo can also keep them away

I found the kids used to get them a lot and the best way to get rid of them was a very fine comb from the chemist.  Just loads of conditioner and combing every day for a couple of weeks.  I find Julie's idea of the electric comb very interesting!

Trouble is with girls they have long hair and they tend to spread them more.  It's been a couple of years since they had them now, so I'm hoping they've gone for good!

I have to agree with Alz, it's soooo annoying when you do your best to keep your own kids' heads clear of them but there are other parents who don't give a hoot and they keep passing them back to our own kids.

My Dad noticed the problem with Kirsty and made up a hootch aromatherapy solution. It killed then little lighters stone dead ! Shocked

I've asked him for a bucket full. Next time I see him I'll ask for the recipe and will pass it on.

Time to bring back the "Nit Nurse" methinks. In the old day's, last millenium, those people made sure parents did something. If the didn't, they would get the child returned home one day with no hair, cus nit nurse shaved it off.  Shocked

I have just spent a pleasant 2 hours treating all the children with a 'hootch aromatherapy solution' ( Clap Nick)

I have 3 foster children at the moment, the 2 oldest had the worst headlice I have ever seen (when she first came I thought the oldest had blonde streaks in her hair until I looked closely and it was nit eggs!)

Anyway, got them clear with the oil concoction and they have stayed clear for 3 months until now.

You're right about the 'nit nurse'  Children suffer badly from having headlice - they have disturbed sleep and problems concentrating due to the continual itching. Schools should be allowed to treat those children whose parents obviously don't give a toss!!
