Latest Spam Problem
« on: Sunday June 22, 2014, 09:37:28 PM »
Dear All,

Apologies for the recent downtime - We had a rather bad bout of spam, resulting in some 500 spammy posts, with around 450 spammy accounts behind them.

Luckily, I've cleaned it all out, and everything should be OK now.

However, in order to try and stop the spammers, I've had to tweak a few of the security settings. Firstly, since all of these messages originated from only a handful of IP addresses, and were posted in rapid succession, I've enabled flood control. This stops messages from the same IP posting in rapid succession. If you get a note about this, do not worry. Genuine users shouldn't ever trigger it, as they normally take a while to compose a post.

Secondly, I've increased the captcha complexity.

I'll be watching over the next week or so to see what effect this has had.
