Hi Guys, A long read, but I need some help please, desperately…. I am 25, male and relatively fit (of course enjoy the odd beer andcigarette, at a weekend but eat proper meals, drinks water daily andplay sports). I also rarely get ill (I have had like one cold in thelast year which lasted a couple of days).

During my teenage years, my skin began to change and it bothers me greatly. My skin, especially around the face, has gone this sort ofbizarre darky yellow pale colour if you know what I mean (it makes me lookquite Eastern European). It is quite predominant around my chin, my mouth andacross the middle of my forehead and onto the topsides of my head. I have massive vainy dark rings round my eyes that make me look like adrug addict! In addition, I have received new little dark moles/spotsacross my face, arms quite a bit etc. This skin never changes. I can’teven get a tan when playing sports in hot whether or sunbathing onholiday. All, in all, I look very unhealthy.  A further strange symptom, which has gone with this change, is my righteye having a little blur, like a tiny curled up hair, (I think they are called 'floaters' in the medical world) in constant version.

Another thing perhaps worth mentioning is that despite thisdiscolouring of my skin, the skins of my ears have stayed exactly thesame - pink and white - and they go red when hot etc. In fact it lookslike I have been given two ear transplants, due to skin of the ears and face looking so different!

I would just like to add that I have no history of anything than Western Caucasian in my family bloodline. I have blue eyes in fact, and was born blonde (though has turned to brown over the years), and my parents are very pinked skin.

I have been to the NHS British Doctors several times, had some bloodtest and seen some skin specialists, but it is the same old tune –blood tests are fine, liver and kidney functions are fine, just get onwith your life and glad you don’t have some seriously illness. Yet,little do they realise how much this ‘change’ really bothers me –I keep getting people asking me why I look so tired! I have also been tested for Addison’s disease, which I do not have.  An interesting result from a recent blood test was that my Haemoglobin was just under the average even though I eat a heck of a lot of meat. The Doctor, as usual, said ‘not too worry’ and didn’t prescribe meanything – so I decided to take my own action. I started taking 200mg of Iron, orally, per day (Ferrous Sulphate) In addition, with awell-respected multi-vitamin and an oxidant drink available from anherbalist.

After doing this for two weeks, nothing major has changed, but I still have noticed some tiny improvements. Some of the very dark skin aroundmy eyelid has gone slightly the lighter and the bit of impaired versionin my eye been reduced slightly. The change is very tiny though and nodoubt only noticeable to me who frets, and thus examines daily, thestate of my skin.

So, I ask, myself, what do I do now? Shall I pay to see a skinspecialist privately, who might show more sympathy? I am thinking thebest option is paying for a Health MOT where plenty of tests are done onyou, to assess your health, and then you can discuss it for a bit with aprivate doctor. To me, who knows nothing about medicine, surely that I have spotted some minimal positive changes from taking this new concoction of minerals and vitamins, shows that their must be somethingi nternally not-quite-right and all I have to do is find on what I need more of (perhaps a certain vitamin) and then have lots of it.

Please help! Any advice, at all, will do. This ‘condition’ isruining my confidence and therefore a big chunk of my life. Can post apicture if needed!

Cheers

Mike

Hi Mike, welcome to SC.

I'm afraid I can't help you much at all. There is a skin condition where the skin looses pigmentation, often called geographic skin.

I think I would ask for another referral to see a different derm, or perhaps even an internist. It is a shame that the doc doesn't understand that this is a big deal for you. Try to find somebody who will understand that.

I agree with CJ. It sounds awful, and the darn doctors should realize that! My mama will occasionally mention that I'm "yellow around the eyes," but this hasn't been any major change like you've got (and I don't know what causes it even if it was :/ ).

I would invest in the expensive doctor for a consultation... it would be worth it to get your confidence back.

i agree that you should consult someone who is more sympathetic to your problem. i finally found a great derm who has at least helped lessen my symptoms.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the nice comments. Really bucked me up. Sometimes it seems no one cares  Angry

What would be your advice on who to see, though? I know this is a skin forum, but I really think seing a derm would be pointless as I just look ill and pale. It's not like I have some sort of skin condition, like Eczama, which can be treated and with the right cream.         .

I am really convinced their must just be something internal not working perfectly and all I need to is find out what it is. Chinese Medicine says, apparently, that 'floaters' in the eye, dark circles and new dark spots is to do with the congestion of liver and kidney.

That's why I fancy a general health check-up because they do all sorts of tests on kidneys, liver etc

Anyway, Ive decided to stop drinking and smoking (not that I do much anyway, apart from weekends, like most young men) for a month to see what results that brings.

Your advice please what ever your opinion would be greatly apprciated.

Then that's where you should start! You've answered your own question! Grin Go to your GP, or PCP and have a physical. Then see what the results are and go from there.

You don't say which country you live in, sometimes that can affect access.

Hm. I just noticed something... you say that your hemoglobin levels are slightly low?

A year or two ago I FINALLY got relief for a major problem of mine (PMT) that had been plaguing me for years. The problem, as it turned out, was a lack of vitamin D. MY doctor prescribed me some extra-strength D supplements and I've been peachy after that.

The reason I bring this up is because my blood tests showed that my levels were on the low side of average. According to the tests, I had enough... barely. I'm betting that your hemoglobin count may be the same way... it looks OK on the test scores, but for you personally, it's very low.

I think that's a good place to begin, myself... do some online research on hemoglobin and come to your doctor's office armed and ready. Keep us posted, OK? Good luck!!

Hi Mike,

I just read this.  There are at least 3 types of medical help you might benefit from: GPs for a general health check up, dermatologists for expert help on your skin, and psychiatrists to deal with your stress and how you think about your appearance/health.  If your skin condition is 'ruining your life' and making you 'desperate' then you should definitely see all 3 of these people - and pay privately if you can't get an NHS referral to good consultant dermatologists and psychiatrists.

I know you might be reluctant to see a psychiatrist or psychologist but I would strongly urge it after reading your posts.  Daily fretting and checking of your skin, using phrases like 'my life is ruined' and the fact that GPs can't understand the problem all make me think you would benefit from talking this over with someone with a view to seeing if your thoughts are realistic and helpful. I had similar issues and doing this helped me a lot.  Smiley

Cheers,
Graham.
