Have been out of action for a few weeks, a nasty case of pneumonia which landed me in hospital all over the new year.. seriously, was quite ill. Had a flu and then it just progressed... felt really bad, temp of 39.8, sweats, vomitting, really severe pain in the ribcage and severe dehydration... i take back all i have said about antibiotics, cos in this instance they saved the day(i.v).. had a crp level of 298(infection level) normal being 7...spent 10 days on antibiotics and fluid drips and am feeling a good bit better...just a bit tired at times...BUT here's the good part, i haven't smoked in almost 3 weeks, and although i'm like the anti christ i feel good about it...eating for Ireland and piling on the pounds but who cares, can always lose the weight again.... Gee it's great to be back  Grin

Hugs Annie, sorry I missed the thread  Kiss

Sounds like you have been through the ringer these last few weeks  Shocked

Well done on not smoking. Do you think you might stop for good now ? Have you tried the patches ? Me and DH gave up, it will be 3 years in the Spring. We used patches and the inhalators, both of us had smoked for over 20 years and gave up first try. I cant recommend them enough, best thing I ever did !

Hugs Yes, you must eat now, get your strength up, you can always lose it later  Nod

Glad to see you back, you have been missed  Hugs

Hi anniemary - welcome back, so glad you are better. How on earth did all that happen to land you in hospital? -- I knew somebody regular was missing, but thought I'd made a mistake.

Your smoking experience or lack thereof, in hospital, is one of my biggest frights, I freely admit.

Good for you! Scary thought for me, but full of admiration for you.

My dearest honey quit smoking about a year ago, using the pill. He piled on the weight too, but managed to lose it later - he started running. (Well, he started walking, and worked his way up.)

Geez, I'm glad you're feeling better! That sounded awful Shakes head Great to have you back!! Yay !

Smiley Annie, I know what you mean, it can seem pretty daunting, but its one day at a time and as you go along, the need does get less and less and more fleeting. At times when my craving was high, I would imagine going to the shop and getting some and how I would feel if I did light up. Disapointed, with myself after going for so long.

Its good to have support and to remind yourself of all the benefits of not smoking. See your nurse at the surgery, see what she can prescribe you, or go to a support group. Have a little read up here : http://smokefree.nhs.uk

My brother had tried allsorts, even hypnotherapy, but couldnt give up his last 5 ciggies a day. When me and Nick stopped it spurred him on and with the aid of patches and gum and 4 group sessions, he gave them up too. That was over a year ago now.

Have you used anything to help so far, or is just your iron will ?

Be proud Annie, its not an easy thing to do, WELL DONE and KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK !!!  Clap Clap Dance Dance Yay ! Yay ! Bounce Bounce

Great news about your honey giving up Bamawing, all these success stories are really spurning me on, so thanks for that and your kind words Hug...
Barefoot, thank you for all your support too... Your right, i would be very annoyed with myself if i did smoke one now... Paul smokes so it makes it that bit harder, though bless him he does go out to the bottom of the garden to have one... I haven't used anything to help me but the hospital did offer me patches to bring home but so far haven't needed them.. When i become comfortable with not smoking, i'll address the weight then.... thanks again doll  Hug

Hmmm.  I've never been a smoker, so I don't speak from experience, but maybe you could try some low or no calorie things to distract you from snacking...

You could:
- chew gum
- make a pot of a low cal, broth based soup.... maybe something with leeks and a few other veggies
- sip some herbal tea
things like that...

Or maybe force yourself to climb a set of stairs or walk around the block when the urge to eat strikes you?

Good luck!!!

Good for you giving up smoking!  Hugs

I honestly don't have any suggestions for managing the weight gain, since I'm having problems with that myself.  Itchy's ideas look good to me.
