AndyB - You are Amazing. Every one of your posts is interesting, intelligent and well written. SkinCell would not be the same without you. Congratulations on reaching 3000. I look forward to reading 3000 more. Please never stop.

                An ACE-3000

The final ACE 3000 variation shown above, was beautifully illustrated in a painting titled "High-Tech Steam" by Charles Amos, showing an ACE 3000 passing Rowland's C&O no. 614, which appeared in October 1986. This version of the ACE had "standard" cabs in lieu of the safety cabs shown in earlier illustrations. Prints of this painting were available from HistoricRail (no affiliation), but are not listed currently.

Blimey Guys! You're just too kind!  :bighug:

3,000 posts and I hadn't even noticed!

Thank you thank you thank you!

BB I like the ACE 3000 picture - how appropriate is that! - what a fascinating locomotive that was - if only it had ever been built. For those interested in this kind of thing it was a 1980's concept 3,000 horsepower coal-fired steam locomotive that would have used state-of-the art technology and would have allowed countries with large coal reserves (like the US and China) to be fuel-independent - that is, not have to import large quantities of oil from elsewhere to power their locomotives as is currently the case.

The picture shows the ACE 3000 loco - which in outline looks more like a modern diesel-electric than a traditional steam locomotive - with Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad J3A class 4-8-4 No 614 steam loco in the background.

As part of the concept, in 1985 when oil fuel costs were rising steeply (sound familiar?), the J3A #614 was used to haul revenue-earning freight trains to gather data to compare fuel costs against a then standard diesel-electric loco, and came out cheaper! (because coal was so much cheaper than fuel oil). The ACE3000 if built would have been even cheaper in terms of fuel cost as it would have been up to 3 times more efficient than #614!! sadly, it never left the drawing board - maybe with fuel prices on the up again, someone will dust off the plans - but that someone will need $$$$$$$$$$ - I wonder if Bill Gates like trains?!

Happily, #614 is still with us, although in store in Pennsylvania awaiting restoration at the mo. You can see her in action on Youtube including aerial shots and interviews with her then owner Ross Rowland (who rather spookily could be my double (in a few years time!!)) :

Yay!!!

I got to ride a couple of trains on my trip... I'll have to get all the photos transferred to my computer and uploaded. But I'll add a few good ones to this thread in your honor, Andy!
