Hi Some_G,
There is more than one Dermatologist within each hospital trust. If there are two major hospitals within that trust then there normally is a derm in each one, along with his registrar and doctors. One derm will be the clinical director over all derms in those hospitals which make up the trust.
Doctors will make initial attempts to treat it, but you are perfectly within your rights to state that you wish to see a derm should it persist.
I personally think your best course of action is to go to the doctor. You need a doctors advice. He may think it is jock itch himself, but after telling him everything you have tried, he needs to prescribe a cream that is sensitive to this yeast, (if that's what it is) and the only way that he can find that out is to swab the area. An oral antifungal may also be prescribed depending on what the doc thinks it is.  If , having tried that there is no good response from his prescription, then request a derm.
You will not only be on the correct path for treating this, but you will also put your mind at rest. Isn't a 10 minute appointment worth that, no matter how embarrassing? You ain't got nothing he/she hasn't seen before, and on a daily basis for all the years they have been in medical training and practise.
I do hope you will pluck up the courage to go, then it's done isn't it?

Sorry about the late reply

I haven't been to the doctor yet, but I probably should. The reason I havn't is because the colour had faded down again so I didn't know if it was the cream that was helping it  Huh

Not looking forward to seeing the doctor  Sad

Hey everybody...
I don't know if anybodies following this thread anymore, but I'll keep it going in case somebody is.

I finished the lamsil cream about a week ago; and it was the large one as well (15g). I've booked a doctors appointment on wednesday so I'll let everybody know how it goes.

Oh by the way, the itch has got worse since I stopped using the cream; its much more clearly visible now (Still, it is never anywhere near as bad as it was) whereas before the mark had almost gone.

Thanks for everybodies support.

Okay I went and spoke to the female(!) doctor about it which wasn't that bad and after a quick look (I made sure I was wearing shorts so I was well prepared  Grin) she prescribed me some more cream (2x30g), this time at 2%. Thats 4 times the amount of cream I got with the lamsil.

At first I didn't think it was working, then it got a bit better, now I'm not sure if it's working again. It's still red. I'm hoping it's gone for my 16th birthday... would make a nice present.

Had my mum making a big fuss because I told her what it was and she forgot, so I wasn't telling her again as it was embarrassing enough telling her once (I made it seem like a scar on my right thigh, although it's a bit different to that)... so yeah I coldly told her to drop the subject and she brought it up again later when I told her to "mind her own business". I felt bad, but what else can I do, considering it was my parents that I was worried about in the first place. My dad never knew I went to the doctor because he was away on work at the time.

I'll post again when there's more news (either it's gone or I'm going back to the doctor)

Well it's now a year later and I just finally plucked up the courage to see my G.P. the biggest problem having now seen two different G.P.s on this issue, either the medication isn't strong enough or it not in large enough quantities or the pill version runs out so it fairs up again... It's annoying me as I keep asking to see a skin specialist and they seem to think they can clear it, well nothing working... the lamsil doesn't work. I did see an advert for an STD clinic in East London near West Ham any address on that place? I really need to get this cleared up soon and with someone who knows what they are doing... The Soho clinic is really geared to the Homeless People and open only during working hours...

Can I just walk into a nearby hospital and ask to see a dermatologist without an referral from a G.P?

Hi, I would think that you can always walk into a hospital and ask to see a doctor. With any luck that doctor would refer you to a Derm. either one at the hospital, or one in practice. Sorry, I'm in Canada.......I think UK would have a consultant dermatologist on staff.

Today 12th July 2009 and I've still got it and I just can't seem to get rid of it the Doctors prescription don't seem to last the length of time require to clear it up as soon at the pills and Canesten cream runs out it come back.  Sad

I am at a lost It feel like I had it for two years now. Any advice on what I should ask for medication wise, I feel the doctors don't seem to know what's best at times to treat it. So it the same cycle ever six weeks or so of meeting a doctor for the umpteen time. I'm losing track the number of times I seen them.

Hi, so sorry to hear that things aren't that much better for you.

You need to see a Dermatologist. If you have already seen one, what has been prescribed isn't working, so you need to see another. Please ask for another referral if that's the case.

I feel so badly that you are trying to manage this at your age.......please be kind to yourself and get it seen to.

I been meaning to come on here for a while, after 5 or so visits to a G.P. the G.P. finally let see a Dermatologist and he suggested using a moisturiser which seem very odd for a "sweating" problem. He also suggested using a product called "Canesten Dual Action Cream" used for Athlete's foot. That worked, so much better than the "useless" lamsil and Canestan other product that the G.P. keeps giving me. One stage I was even taking a pill version for so long I had to had a blood test to see if the liver was o.k.

Out of interest after over two/three years with this problem I have to keep using the "Dual action cream" now and again the area left infected had left a "shiny" skin which is an area most likely to reinfect itself. Which is annoying. As I like to reiterate there's hope so use "Canesten Dual Action Cream" not Lamsil which you can buy both of these in front of the counter at a chemist. I just wonder how much longer I have to us this stuff until it's cleared up.
