So here's a new thread for Skincell talents.

Unfortunately, I can't claim to any talents. Except making people laugh every now and again. That's not really a talent though. More like an accidental ability.

I can play the keyboard a bit, but I can't really post it wi'out it sounding bad.

Anyways, post away to your hearts content, or if you want to keep your own thread running, please post a link here.

Maybe one of our wonderful moderation team (Praise) can make this thread sticky?

Matt

...and we're all very, very shy. Undecided

* Bamawing braces herself and bustles around the thread, dusting, cleaning, making those little cards with artists' names and the title of the work* ready. Meanwhile, Jeff the Wonderful Cyber-Bartender is catering the affair, with wine, cheese, and bottled water. And chocolate. Lots of chocolate.

There. That oughta get people in here!

And now for a picture to break the ice... I'm proud of this one. I think she's the fairy I based my Halloween Costume on. One day I'll actually finish sewing that costume, too! Laughing Out Loud

Oh, Bama, she's darling!  I have enormous respect for people who can actually draw things, something I'm no good at.  My mother is an extremely talented artist (her medium is pencil) and I think it's because she's so good that I've never considered myself to have any kind of talent.  It took me forever to find my own artistic voice.

I've posted this on the stained glass thread http://www.skincell.org/community/index.php?topic=16830.msg221454#msg221454 , but I'll repeat it here.  This is perhaps my favorite work, a stained glass version of one of my daughter's recital photos.

*Modified to add:  I've included the photo from which I worked.

I don't have a picture - you'll read why in a mo

Many years ago, when my younger sister was at Guides, I happened upon a fruit cake cooling on the rack in the kitchen.

Me (being me) thought YUM! and picked the top of the cake (the way you do...)

Enter Mother (stage left), sees the despoilt cake and the trail of crumbs (smoking gun evidence) and gets very upset with me. Moi? What have I done? Only spoilt my sister's entry in the Guides Cake Baking Competition. 'Well you'd better make a replacement - and quick.'

Look in the fridge - no eggs - they've already been used in the cake and the shops are closed. After knocking on the neighbours' doors I've managed to scramble together (not literally) enough eggs and other missing ingredients to make a start...

...some time later there's a fruit cake sitting on the cooling rack with a notice saying Do Not Touch! (still had to guard against other pickers! in the family).

Anyway the cake was duly entered and won 1st prize!  Grin

TF, please feel free to post all your beautiful work up here, too. Itchy, that makes me want to wear it!! I bet it jingles. Bunnie, I love them... the simplicity reminds me of Amish dolls and stained glass windows. The second one really speaks to me.

Andy, I love fruit cake!!!!! It's always great to meet someone else that loves fruit cake. Everyone in my family loves it, and I always thought it was a normal thing to like. Another hidden talent! Nod

I am the mistress of the typo, aren't I? Roll Eyes I don't mind a bit. But it's "you," not "y'all," since "y'all" is always plural. Unless you're referring to my multiple personalities?

Wow!

Super stuff here. I am very impressed Cool.

My skills are rather boring. Can fix wahing machines, replace clutches on cars, laminate flooring, hang wall paper better than anyone I know, strip and rebuild  a cycle in a couple of hours etc.

On the creative side. Well construction kits when i was younger. As a child my artistic efforts rather poor.

Wow! There are some amazing talents here! Clap for all the supremely-talented SkinCell members!

I don't think I have any outstanding talents. I play piano and guitar and sing decently, but I'm no virtuoso by any stretch of the imagination.

Let's see, I'm also pretty athletic--does that qualify as a talent?

Sounds like your'e pretty well talented to me soccergl! I play guitar a little, and used to sing in our local folk clubs, for a long time. I would regard myself as a good cook, having had a hotel and restaurant, you need to be , in case you have to take the reins should a tempermental chef stomp off for any reason!
I am a hopeless gardener, any plant in my care is on a death sentence! I have told all of my friends and family never to buy me plants, because I hate looking after them and they always end up sick, and I have a huge guilt trip!

Here's a little something I'm quite proud of  Grin

I built this Stuart Turner No 10 vertical steam engine, machined from raw castings and other materials some years ago as a project at a metalwork evening class I signed up for at a college in Cambridge.

It has a cylinder bore and stroke of 3/4" and stands approx 9" high. It is currently fitted with a disc flywheel which makes it suitable for driving a model boat up to four feet long but I do also have a larger flywheel somewhere.

It has run at a surprisingly high speed on compressed air but I've not steamed it (I don't have a suitable boiler - yet. I started to fit Stephenson's reversing gear to it but, unfortunately, I didn't get the timing right and the valve gear got a bit bent.  Cry

It's now sitting on a shelf, I guess awaiting my retirement.....

The reason I'm proud is that I built this with no previous engineering training or knowledge of how lathes or milling machines work - one of the reasons it took me two years to build I guess - but it was a fascinating exercise all the while and I certainly learnt a few things I didn't know before.

I have done TF, but they're all a bit basic. One was published in a magazine when I was about 13 which I was quite proud of at the time.

I'm also told I'm a really good cook... when I have the time.

But WOW some of these pictures in this thread are awesome. I have to say I can't draw AT ALL!  There are a LOT of talented people here, that's for sure.

That is so clever andyb! Excuse my ignorance here, but how would you fit a boiler to that to run it?
Do you have model trains set up in a spare room or attic? I always loved seeing anything like that

I have a huge guilt trip!
This is me and goldfish .... I have an indoor garden/pond that I periodically attempt to put goldfish into, but the results are usually mortally catastrophic for the poor fishies .... I currently have two new ones in there and if they dont survive I will give up on that idea forever.

I'm also told I'm a really good cook... when I have the time.

Maybe we should exchange some of our best recipes, Wooley ....
