Has any one tried proactiv before for acne, I was wondering if anyone had tried it and if it works, I have a friend that needs something for her face but did not want her to buy expensive solutions if they didnt work,
Thanks

Haven't used it. Probably would do a few other things for acne first. Pretty pricey system of oxidizer with an initially stronger solution, followed by what is essentially witch hazel mixed with another botanical, and then closing the treatment with a milder solution of oxidizer to reduce the speed with which organisms repopulate the skin. I have real mixed feelings about doing this.
But let's say I would like to try something of the sort. I think I would take some ordinary 3% hydrogen peroxide, mix it with twice the volume of water and swab it on the face, staying away from the eyes. I'd wait a couple of minutes, flush the face with fresh water, pat dry. Apply some witch hazel. Blot dry. Apply a milder solution of hydrogen peroxide (3% with perhaps 6 equal volumes of water), still avoiding the eyes. Immediately blot dry, and I would not rinse this time.
Cost of the materials to do this procedure 100 times would be 5 or 6 dollars total, about a nickle per treatment. Cost of the Proactiv stuff with shipping, maybe $45 or more. My way is experimental. The Proactiv way is commercial. My way requires thought and close attention to detail and ongoing reasoned analysis of the condition of the skin. With the Proactiv you can just follow the directions and hope for the best. This post is not advice for anyone. It is just one of the things I might try if I were dealing with a complexion problem like acne. Anthropositor

Thanks Anthro, What you have said makes a lot of sense to me , This girlfriend of mine has tried the witch hazel and it does nothing for her , the dr. put her on accutane but she had so many side effects from that , so she quit taking it , she has not tried the hydron peroxide and witch hazel together, so I will tell her to try that and see what happens
Thanks for the input .

The order of procedure and the other details are important. You might want to print them out for her. Anthro

Yes Quinoderm is a reasonable alternative approach, quite a bit more economical. I believe they have more than one product. Start with the mildest strength and work up from there.

My daughter was given a set of the Proactiv products for free and used them and they didnt work to cure her acne. She is 21 and from my own personal experience with acne I think that what works for one will not always work for another. Proactive may work for some is what I am trying to say..... but it is an expensive experiment!

Right Vicki. Cheapest, mildest first, since you can't tell in advance what is going to work for your particular skin problems even though they go by the same name as someone else's problem.

I'm with you CB. I thought I'd be done with all that acne stuff after my teen years. I tend to break out on my chin and near my hairline when I get stressed out (which seems to be a lot lately). My skin was acting up pretty badly a couple weeks ago, so I thought I'd try the hydrogen peroxide/witch hazel approach that anthropositor mentioned. I figured it couldn't hurt and I had both on hand, so why not? It actually cleared up my skin really well and in fact, I haven't had a pimple since I've been doing that (thanks anthro!). I only get mild breakouts and everyone's skin is different, but I just thought I'd share my experience with that particular method.

Good luck, CB! I hope it does help with your acne. It would be nice to have one less skin problem to worry about, wouldn't it? . And, at least, if it doesn't help, you're only out a couple of bucks--not like with those expensive treatments. Let me know if it helps.

I tried proactive for at least 3 months and only got worse the longer i used it. Fortunately i had a good deal on the price. Only about 25 dollars. But still! For nothing? I paid over a hundred dollars for MORE acne scars! Ugh. If i wasn't trying to get pregnant i'd go for the accutane.
