My girlfriend is having her tonsils removed eventually as she gets toncilitus on average once every 6 weeks , leaving her very poorly!
Just asking about, the general reply is that a tonsilectomy is a fairly serious operation in adults.
Has anyone else had any experience of this? as i'm really in the dark over it all, and to be honest fairly worried as she is going in on friday (only finding out today).
Any help would be much appreciated!

My daughter had her tonsils removed at 17, she came through it fine, keep the pain killers handy for a week may be, and she should eat as normally as possible, that helps the throat to heal. There may be some ear discomfort too, again she just needs to look after herself for awhile, but in a short while she will be glad there will be no more tonsillitis. Any operation involving general anaesthetics in any age are serious, but in hospitals they are very much routine Hope your girlfriend makes a speedy recovery, I am sure she will, and of course she will be a little anxious, before surgery. The hospital staff will tell her the does and don'ts, she must follow their advice for certain

Thanks for the help, she is not really all that anxious to be honest... I seem to be the one who is more worried about it all!!! I've taken a week off work to look after her, I just think she is only bothered about missing uni work!

I had both my tonsils and adenoids removed when I was 6. I got ice cream and jelly afterwards.

my daughter is 10 yrs old and she needs to have her tonsils taken out she get about 6 infections per year, but the doctors here in puerto rico say its dangerous to have them taken out it might cause bactirial buildup, her tonsils are the size of big marbles! (the big ones). cant wait to move to the states! again.

I am 30 yrs. old and I am going to have a tonsilectomy. I am told that this is a very painful procedure for adults and that I would be out on bedrest from 10-14 days. I was also warned that the threat of bleeding in the mouth was very real and that normally tonsilectomies are not done on adults. This is a last attempt to correct another problem that I have, obstructive sleep apnea. I was wondering if anyone else shares this affliction and if there are any adults who have gone through this surgery. Thanks!

Welcome to Skincell Alaskadame! Yes we do have another member here who suffers from sleep apnea. As I said previously I had my tonisls and adenoids reomoved as a child but I also had an operation to remove the skin from my palate a few years ago. It was pretty painful and I had to wear a protective mouth brace until the skin grew back.

Hi Alaskedame, i'm 26 and going in for the same procedure and the same reasons. I've heard all the same, from the recovery to the bleeding, but all the information i've read _at_ the bleeding is a 1-2% of people who have this done. Some that i've spoken with, said the 2nd day is the worst, but it isn't as bad as expected, and to take the 2 weeks and enjoy them. (that's the hard part for me-I can't stay put for 2 hours:) !!!) A few days of pain has got to be better than another 26+ years of discomfort and problems!!Good luck to you --

How did your gf get on with her tonsillectomy. I had mine out during the Easter vacation and didn't find it a particularly enjoyable experience. One of the nurses when I went for the pre-surgery appointment had advised stocking up on chewing gum (that was a lifesaver though I normally wouldn't touch the stuff). Drinking and eating were a nightmare for the first week and a half. Who thought up that wonderful idea of eating toast, and other crunchy foods straight afterwards? It was torture. After three days of hardly managing anything my partner finally relented and brought on the mashed potatoes and ice cream. What a gem! Am so glad I had it done now though. What a difference - I feel better than I've done in years. I'd become so used to feeling run down that feeling that way had become the norm (used to get several bouts a year). Dhia

I am 37 and went in last monday (17/01/05) to have a tonsillectomy. The operation went ok as far as I could tell, I had a small cut on my mouth and some marks on my tongue but nothing major.
The 1st day wasn't too bad, I felt ok and was able to eat the rough foods that they required in small amounts, the 2nd day was a little better but after that it went down hill. By the 5th day I was ready to kill myself because of the pain (the pain killers lasted a couple of hours but only took the edge off). On the 8th day I had a doctors appointment and I was given a stronger tablet and told I could change one type for another, the 8th was one of the worst. Today is the 9th day and it feels like its getting better.
Some things I did to cope:- stopped eating rough food and went to soft, corned beef slices eaten slowly were good, Macaroni cheese (tinned), creamed rice and jelly. Had my drinking water at room temperature or slightly warmer and cut out anything that was acidic. I bought a warm mist humidifyer and sat in it for 2/3 hours before bed, when I woke up the pain wasn't anywhere near as bad as on days 3-7 and I didn't have the mucus running down the back of my throat.
I hope in a week or two to be back to a more normal diet but if anything comes up I will post again.

Welcome, Alaskadame, Dooners and Gettingbetter! I had mine out at age 9. I don't remember much from it, But I do remember that I was reluctant to eat or drink the first day. I don't know if that was from pain or from my "leave me alone; I want to sleep" tendency. Probably both. Mama fed me crushed ice to keep me hydrated. The only other food I remember at this time was grits. Grits are a salty southern concoction made from hominy... the best description I can think of for them is like a ground-up-semi-liquified-popcorn. I've heard them compared to cream of wheat, but the texture is slightly bumpier. They felt so good going down. Oddly, I don't remember eating them before then, but being from Alabama, I'm sure I had... My husband swears he saw some in a Wisconsin grocery store, so y'all might be able to find them if you look... in the breakfast aisle, near the oatmeal.

Whee, I'm so totally new.
I'm 17, and throughout my life I'm often had fevers accompanied by enlarged tonsils. Bugged me so much. I just got sick recently and am getting over it, but my tonsils are still so huge it's hard to talk and super hard to swallow. My right tonsil has gotten so big it's literally touching my uvula. This is it. I really want a tonsilectomy, but I also sing, and perform in musicals. If I get a tonsilectomy, what effect will it have on my voice? Advice is greatly appreciated.
