Im so proud of my son. Last week was youth deer hunting day, and my oldest son was so excited to be going. Its the first time Ive ever let him near a gun (Im a total spaz when it comes to guns Undecided Embarrassed )  But its something he really wanted to do. So I let him go with his grandfather. They left at 6 am and had all his new birthday gear on... oh u shoulda seen him...
By 1 pm he rings me on my cell to tell me He shot one on his very first try and killed it. A 7 point Buck. He says " you have a hunter now momma" I dont think he'll go again though, he felt really guilty for killing it, (and of coarse they made him help gut it  Lips Sealed Lips Sealed ) but he says hunting is just a way to spend time with Family... (Thank Goodness Cause I dont like venison and id of had to let him bring one home if he kept it up! This time Papa got it  Wink Laughing Out Loud and I get the Task of mounting the antlers for him!!! ) I am just so proud I wanted every one to see!!!

I don't want to upset you Princess, but the pics might offend a few people - especially this side of the pond where hunting is incredibly frowned upon. Just a heads up.

I didn't know hunting was frowned upon in Europe. In the southeastern US, it's a huge big deal. All I saw was the title of this thread and I got all excited!! (Deer are everywhere around here... they're actually a nusince animal, since they have a bad tendency to run into moving cars. Without the natural preditors of wolves, the population goes bananas, and hunting is practically necessary. I've never met a hunter that wouldn't eat what he killed. We actually have a foundation set up here called "hunters for the hungry" that supplies venison to homeless shelters.)

I happen to loooove venison. I'll take any extra off your hands! Wink

Your son looks a lovely little chap, hunting is definately not my thing, its one thing that our cultures have very different views on.

Best Wishes

double - eeek!!  Shocked

PP sorry but I echo Woo on this one  Lips Sealed

I'm sticking to clay pigeon and target shooting....less controversial I hope - (unless you're a clay pigeon...)

Actually your son's splendid outfit reminds me of a joke:

Training Major: "I didn't see you in camouflage class this morning, Smith"

Private Smith: "Thank you, sir!"

I don't want to start a war, but I find it upsetting that the deer are classed as a nuisance because they "run into moving cars". Perhaps it's man's fault for building roads through the deers natural habitat, and for that matter shooting all the wolves in the first place.

Now I'm going to shut up and go and get upset somewhere else.

Actually Bama, it's not just frowned upon here - it's illegal, in the UK anyway.

"Nuisance animal" - isn't that the term the fox hunt campaigners used?

It's a very emotive subject. Think I'll join in with keeping quite now. Or try to anyway.

And as for letting children near guns, that's a totally different issue.  Undecided

I have locked this thread for the moment in order to avoid things getting more heated.  I want to commend all of the participants who have responded so far for keeping their emotions under control up to now, but I can see that it could get out of hand very easily.

Modified post to add:
Photos of deer removed.
